Hello everyone, this week has been so busy at ecoShuttle headquarters, here are some new developments from ecoShuttle Land!
One exciting piece of news is that our newest, smallest vehicle, the new Nissan Leaf has finally made it to Portland. There has been such high demand for this vehicle that it was originally delayed from last December and was expected to arrive in May. Then there was the devastating tsunami in Japan that pushed the date back to the end of June. We’re just excited to finally have it on its way, because the Leaf is the perfect vehicle for trips consisting of 1 to 4 guests, and will be our most cost-effective means of transportation in that regard.
In local news, the state of Oregon shot down legislation to ban plastic bags because of the powerful plastic lobbyists. The upside for this is that the city of Portland can now go ahead and ban the bags, per the pledge of Mayor Sam Adams, who said he would commit to banning the bags if the state legislation stalled.
As I have a dug a little deeper into the plastic bag defenders, I have noticed the big money initiative coming from the American Chemistry Council, a group that glosses over the detrimental effects of polyurethane production and waste with pro-plastic propaganda. The ACC has been hard at work for decades trying to intervene and shape public policy by steering the public debate. They have been quite efficient and successful in their quest for deregulation of the plastic industry, as well as their attempts to thwart plastic bag bans. The ACC is a formidable opponent for those of us who want to ban the bag, but public attitudes toward plastic bags is leaning towards banning them, and in the end that will be the key to banning the bags for good. Go, public opinion, go!
